Maxwell Wildlife Refuge

A bison wanders by the elk cows.

In early March, I had an opportunity to go to Maxwell Wildlife Refuge near McPherson, Kansas for a sunrise photography shoot. This is a fairly small refuge run by Kansas that has a small herd of bison and a small herd of elk.

Dry grass is so delicious.

Unfortunately, the morning was heavy overcast and very windy. So there were no amazing golden hour wildlife shots, but I did get some good pictures anyway. I will share those here!

Right there is all the only bit of sunrise color in the entire sky…

The elk herd was divided between females, youngsters, and young males with the big boys off by themselves.

When this bison came over the hill, the elk herd parted like the Red Sea and gave it plenty of room.

This give perspective of the event. Three trams loaded with photographers and taking us right to the animals.

I took all of these with a Nikon D780 and 200-500mm lens.
