Late Autumn At Quivera Part 3

Yes it is THAT windmill. I tried to get about the same perspective on the shot as my Windmill At Dawn picture. Somehow it does not look the same.

The glow of a late spring dawn makes an entirely different scene.

Finishing up on my visit to Quivera National Wildlife Refuge in Stafford County, Kansas last week. After making a pass through the Wildlife Drive, we visited the Prairie Dog town, and made our way back south to the Little Salt Marsh and returned to the Refuge Headquarters to depart for home.

Lots and lots of sparrows to be seen, good luck getting a good picture.

At he prairie dog town. Not the greatest quality picture, but I loved the way two of them are rared back like that.

As far a prairie dog towns go, this is not a very big one.

A couple of those little critters were grooming each other.

It is pretty interesting how these rodents construct deep tunnels and control vegetation growth.

Across the road from the prairie dogs was a tree filled with red-winged blackbirds.

In a great flurry of activity about half the blackbirds suddenly took to the air.

Within just a few seconds of exploding into the air, they all came back and perched again.

At the north end of the Little Salt Marsh we could see a flock of big birds in the sky circling for landing. When we got closer it was a bunch of pelicans.

I knew they would not sit there while I drove by them, so we crept up on foot and got a few pictures before they decided to leave.

From the observation deck at the Little Salt Marsh you could see a few shorebirds.

There were snow geese in great quantity. There were about three separate groups of them, and occasionally an entire group would lift off at once.
