Winfield Lake

A young bald eagle dining on the local buffet.

I made a visit to Winfield Municipal Lake aka Timber Creek Lake in Cowley County. This is the first time I have been there and I will say I am very impressed. This is in the Flint Hills. Why I have never been there is now a mystery to me.

Coming in for a landing.

There were a couple of flocks of pelicans that were moving around the lake and feeding. Not many ducks or geese. There were at least three juvenile bald eagles and one that looks like is just reaching maturity.

Striking a pose.

A pelican makes a close approach. They are getting breeding plumage, and the beak bump is growing.

Pelicans are big birds. Takes them two or three flaps and hops to get fully airborne.

Another juvenile bald eagle. Looks about two years old.

Such an intent look.

The takeoff.

Up, up, and away!

That’s a big bird.

A turn and then gone!
